Profile

The profile of Chinmaya Mission Amritsar is a case of rare determination and fortitude. From a small beginning when not many people knew Chinmaya Mission, within a short span of time, it has grown into a momentous organization known to almost everyone in the city . Chinmaya Mission It is engaged in spreading the message of Vedanta and promoting values among the youth and children besides rendering social service to the needy.

Smt. Uma Shergil , an ardent devotee with a spiritual bent of mind, came in contact with Pujya Swami Chinmayananda, the founder of Chinmaya Mission, in 1981 and instantly decided to dedicate her life and resources for the Mission. Amritsar being close to Sidhbari(H.P), a major centre of Mission, Swamis visiting there were naturally attracted to the holy city of the Golden Temple. First Gyan Yagna of Gurudev Swami Chinmayananda in 1982 at BBK DAV college for women. Thereafter Gurudev visited Amritsar for a number of times and addressed small gatherings at the residence of the devotees.Swami Tejomayananda, too visited Amritsar in eighties first as Brahmchari and then as Swami. Swami Purshotmananda and Swami Subodhananda also conducted Gyan Yagnas. During that period Mrs. Sarup Narayan Khanna played a significant role in the growth of Mission. This type of elementary arrangement continued for about 15 years.

In the meanwhile Pujya Swami Subodhananda, the Regional Head of Chinmaya Mission had a chance meeting with Sh. Avinash Mohindru at some Rotary Function at Palampur (HD). Impressed by his drive and skill, Swamiji asked Sh. Mohindru if he could help the mission in formally establishing its centre at Amritsar. This was a turning point for both Chinmaya Mission Amritsar and Sh. Avinash Mohendru who agreed to serve the Mission first as Secretary and then as President. He with his visionary approach and organizing skills was able to shape the Mission with a sound organizational base. This arrangement was duly recognized and blessed by Swami Tejomayananda, the global head of the mission in 1997. Uma Shergill after some time resigned as President to devote herself to her sadhana. Subsequently Pujya Swami Tejomayananda ji, appointed Sh Avinash Mohindru as President of Chinmaya Mission Amritsar and asked him to constitute his executive committee.

Subsequently Chinmaya Mission Amritsar Trust was established to plan and execute the various programmes of the Mission at Amritsar. This arrangement was duly recogzined and blessed by Swami Tejomayananda, the global head of the mission in 1997 and it was given the status of Mission Centre in 1999.
